What is pluralism?

Pluralism is the foundation underlying the view of America as a pluralistic society. Pluralism is the coexistence of unique, different groups side by side working together and striving to reach common goals. America as a pluralistic society values justice, unity, civil peace, security, prosperity, human dignity and individual rights for ourselves and others. In a pluralistic society, an individual’s ethnicity and ethnic identity are important components that help an individual develop his/ her language, lifestyles and values. America consists of many ethnic groups that contribute to the diversity within America; thus leading to the rich heritage that makes America a nation built upon the basis of equality and freedom for all. To succeed as a pluralistic society, we must be able to engage and build relationships within and amongst all of the diverse groups within America.
