Purpose of this course
America is rich in diversity, which refers to the differences amongst
human beings. Some differences are highly visible, such as physical
appearance, while others are invisible, such as religion. Keep in mind
that differences do not only exist between diverse groups but also
within diverse groups. The diversity relates to, but is not limited to,
race, ethnicity, social class, gender, sexual orientation, disability
and religion. For the purpose of this course, we will focus on diversity
in relation to culture, gender and sexual orientation. We will discuss
the similarities and differences that humans encounter in a culturally
pluralistic society. We will also develop an appreciation or broader
worldview that can be applied to improve communication skills that will
enhance human relations both in the school and community. It
is not the intent of the course to create assumptions from the
generalizations about the groups addressed within this course.
