What is the need for multicultural education?
To address the diversity within schools and society, instructors must be
able to teach all students. Instructors must display respect and build
upon the cultural characteristics and strengths that each student brings
into the classroom, which is referred to as cultural competency. The
overall goal is for students to acquire the knowledge, skills and values
needed to be productive members of a dynamic and diversified society,
which can be accomplished through multicultural education.
Students from minority cultures are at a higher risk of dropping out of school. Students who do not graduate from high school make less money than their cohorts who did graduate from high school. As a society, we must be able to assist these at-risk students to get jobs with a higher income so they can be productive citizens within society. Students who complete their education will also be able to prepare their own children for their education. Thus, their children will have a higher chance of completing school and formal education to obtain higher paying jobs.
