What does diversity look like in the American classroom?
To understand the influence of culture on education, we must first take
a look at diversity within the classroom. In the classroom today,
- students of color now comprise approximately 40% of all students in PreK-12th grade public schools in the United States;
- 85 percent of teachers are White; 75 percent are female;
- by 2030, students of color will account for nearly one-half of elementary and secondary school populations; and
- in Arizona, California, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, and Texas, students of color already represent more than 50% of school populations.
