What is the influence of communication on culture?
Culture is dependent upon communication. It is through communication
that individuals within a culture create and share their customs,
rituals, roles, laws and other patterns of behavior. It is through the
social context that an individual determines the meaning of a verbal or
non-verbal communication pattern. In the African American culture,
communication is passionate and less formal than among the dominant
culture. Further explanation and details of communication styles
characteristic to cultures are provided in future sections of the
course. Non-verbal communication patterns can include bowing, kissing,
shaking hands, facial expressions and etc. Some cultures welcome
physical contact while others shy away from it. Research has shown that
a teacher’s non-verbal communication can convey approval or disapproval
which may strengthen or weaken a student’s response within the
classroom.
