English Language Learners and education
ELLs have a high dropout rate. ELLs are also amongst the lowest ranking
in academic achievement and expectations. ELLs may also experience
"language shock", which is a struggle to learn the English language and
to be accepted in a society that is not always willing to accept
diversity. ELLs may feel as though they have to abandon their native
language to become Americanized and to learn English. This can lead to a
power struggle between the use of their native language and English.
