Stereotypes
How can you tell if something that is said or believed is a stereotype?
It is a stereotype if it assigns assumptions or characteristics to an
individual based solely on group membership, such as race, gender,
religion, age, culture and etc. Here are a few examples of stereotypes:
- Kenya didn't get his homework finished because all Black people are lazy.
- Tom did not select anyone of color to be on his team because he is White and they are all racist.
- I would not work for Anthony. He is Italian and they are all in the Mob.
- I wouldn't be in a group with Sean. He will be drunk because all Irishman are drunks.
- All southerners are rednecks and dim-witted.
- Of course, Lee aced that exam. All Asians are smart at math and science.
- All jocks are stupid.
- All blondes are air heads.
- Men do not cry or show their emotions.
- All females are not smart at science or math.
- All women with really short hair are dykes.
- Jose doesn't want to get caught by the cops. All Hispanics are illegal immigrants.
- All Jews are tight with their money.
- All Muslims are terrorists.
- All old people are awful drivers.
